VPN turns off on Android or iOS? Enabling killswitch

Introduction

When there’s a brief VPN server connection break or Wi-Fi/LTE disconnection, Android and iOS phones by default turn off the VPN.
First, this is simply inconvenient - you have to open the app and manually enable it every time. This becomes particularly annoying when watching Instagram Reels or YouTube videos.
Second, this creates privacy issues - with VPN disabled, your internet provider and government agencies can analyze your traffic, and you reveal your real IP address to websites and applications.
Fortunately, modern smartphones provide Always-On VPN functionality or the so-called Killswitch - a tool that prevents internet access without VPN and automatically enables VPN when the internet is turned on.

Keep in mind: in case of problems with the VPN server or an expired VPN subscription, you will need to disable this function to access the internet.

Android

Find the system VPN settings (on different devices they are located in different places - use the search in settings with the query “vpn”).

In this example, we’re using v2rayNG: v2rayNG_1.10.23_universal.apk, but Always-on works with any VPN application.

Tap the gear icon next to the VPN application.

Depending on your device, you’ll see either the “VPN always on” or “Always-on VPN” option, enable it.

If you need full Killswitch functionality - enable “Block connections without VPN”.

To verify that everything is working, try turning the internet off and on - the VPN will enable automatically.

iOS OneXray

Go to OneXray settings (if not installed yet, here’s the link: OneXray)

Go to TUN Settings

Toggle “Always on” to the enabled position and tap “Save”

To verify that everything is working, try turning off the VPN and wait a few seconds - the VPN will turn back on.
